U.N. suspends aid deliveries in Nigeria’s Borno state

The United Nations has temporarily suspended aid deliveries in Borno state.
This decision comes after a humanitarian convoy was attacked and two people were injured on Thursday.

UNICEF said the unknown assailant attacked the convoy as it returned to Maiduguri after delivering aid in Bama, injuring a UNICEF employee and an International Organization for Migration contractor.

Medecins Sans Frontieres reports that many children are in need of food and medical assistance in the region. Borno state is a bedrock of the militant attacks and residents have suffered from the direct impact of insurgency in the state.

Meanwhile, the UN has expressed great concern about the level of devastation caused by the incessant attacks of the so-called Boko Haram militant group in the Lake Chad.

Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs,
Jeffrey Feltman while briefing the security council, stressed that insecurity has disrupted trade routes between Chad and Nigeria, interrupting the supply of basic goods and resulting in price hikes.

Feltman, who has just returned from a visit to Republic of the Congo, Chad, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, said “a military approach, while essential, will not bring to an end the Boko Haram threat.
