Olympic Skeet Shooter Kim Rhode: 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me (I’m Related to Two U.S. Presidents)
Olympic skeet shooter Kim Rhode is busy getting ready for her sixth Olympic Games. If she snags her sixth medal, she will be the first American to medal in six consecutive Olympics. During a break from training — and taking care of her son Carter, 3 — she shared 25 fun facts about herself.
1. I play Clash of Clans.
2. My high-school friend and I married brothers.
3. My favorite food is spaghetti and meatballs.
4. I’m a disaster and doomsday preparer.
5. I absolutely love Halloween decorations and Christmas lights. I go all out decorating for holidays and parties.
6. Growing up, I played lots of video games and I believe this helped to develop my hand-eye coordination.
7. I collect first edition children’s books (I have about 2,000) that I’ve never read. I collect them for the art.
When I retire I look forward to reading them all!
8. I wore red, white and blue braces on my teeth as a teenager. I got them off just before the 1996 Olympics.
9. When I was a little kid, I ran across a box of my dad’s old high school and college trophies from wrestling, and my dad was quick to point out that someday I would have trophies of my own. I replied, “I don’t think so, not that many!” As usual, he was right! 10. I’m working on our family tree on Ancestry.com and found out I’m related to two U.S. presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and Samuel Morse, who invented Morse Code.
11. I go antiquing in all the places that I travel, looking
for books.
12. I’m 5-foot-4 and everyone teases me about not
blowing over in the wind with my size 10 feet.
13. I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life.
14. I’ve had to step up my game because I only speak
English and my son is trilingual, learning English,
Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
15. I have made stained glass windows, some of which are in my 1922 Craftsman home.
16. My favorite color is blue.
17. I have 15 old cars and trucks, and I enjoy working on them.
18. I love gardening, and I planted literally hundreds of
bulbs around my cabin in the mountains.
20. My husband is a musician and we own a boutique
recording studio, Wail House Recording.
21. I can print and write cursive with both my left and
right hand.
22. When I started shooting, I only hit eight targets out
of 25 my first round of skeet.
23. I’m ultra competitive in board games and cards —
except with my family.
24. Once, in Peru at the Pan American Games, I fell and cracked my head open. I had to have five staples from the team doctor in the hotel room to close the gash, and then I competed the next day.
25. I hate needles, and three times I have gone to have
the Olympic rings tattooed on me (twice with teammates). Twice they were closed and once they
couldn’t fit me in. I’m taking this as an omen: no tattoo
for me.
