Egypt free from Zika despite mosquito genus existence
Mosquitoes from the Aedes aegypti genus exist at a limited-scale in Egypt, but they do not carry the Zika virus, head of the Preventive Medicine sector Amr Qandil told Youm7 Sunday.
The authorities combat the spread of the pest regularly, Qandil said.
The virus “does not exist in Egypt” and the East Mediterranean region has not recorded a single case, according to a Sunday Health Ministry statement.
The ministry observes the status of Zika virus globally and in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) to take preventive measures so it does not reach Egypt, the statement said.
WHO is still studying whether the virus outbreak should be declared an international health emergency. It has mostly occurred in South and Central America, especially in Brazil.
