Lagos State records first case of Lassa fever



Nigeria's Lagos State government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, who confirmed the outbreak, said in a media that the unfortunate incident was recorded at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Lagos.

"The patient, a 25 year old male undergraduate student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State was reported to have fallen ill after arriving in Lagos and was taken to Ahmadiyah Hospital, Ijaiye Ojokoro, on the 9th of 2016 with the complaints of fever, sore throats and difficult in swallowing. He was subsequently place on admission for six days and thereafter transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, on the 14th of January, 2016. Because the fewer was persistent,and his condition was not improving, he was confirmed as a case of Lassa fever of the 15th of January, 2016. The confirmation was made by the Laboratory that worked with us during the Ebola outbreak."

The commissioner added that government has suspended all activities at Ahmaddiyah hospital where the patient was first admitted to allow for medical cleansing.
While advising residents to be vigilant and promptly report any suspected case to nearby health centre, Idris reiterates government’s commitment to effectively contain the outbreak of the fever before spreading to other parts of the stat

Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno State.
Lassa fever is a member of the Arenaviridae virus family. Similar to ebola, clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen
