COEASU begins indefinite strike in Plateau
The College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, of Federal College of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State, has begun an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries and allowances due to them.
The strike, which has paralyzed academic activities of the college, came just as the Colleges of Education Non-academic Staff Union, COEASU, began its own sit-in strike.COEASU Chairman in the institution, Mr. Emmanuel Hemba, said the strike was embarked upon due to the management’s failure to pay last December’s salary and some allowances due its members.
Hemba listed some of the allowances owed the staff to include honorarium of N30,000, work load of N7,500 due lecturers each semester and conference allowances being paid to any lecturer that applied each year.
He lamented the situation where only strike option compels management to listen or comply with unions’ demands in the country.’’We won’t have embarked on strike if the management had acted quickly to our demands,” he said.
However, the college management has urged students to remain calm as efforts were being made to resolve issues with the two unions.College Registrar, Mr. Yakse said: “I have been directed after an emergency meeting today, January 19, 2016, to appeal to all students to remain calm while issues in dispute are being addressed.’’
